One of my favorite types of tile is Zellige tile, but naturally, it’s not the most affordable option. Since I’m also a huge fan of a bargain, I’ve found an impressive round-up of Zellige alternatives. If you don’t know what Zellige tile is, fear not, as I will go over the basics! I’ll also provide you with multiple ways to get the look for much less!
What is Zellige Tile?
Zellige tile is a type of tile that originated in the 10th century in the city of Fez, Morocco. Tile makers create it by hand using a technique that involves cutting geometric shapes out of colored ceramic clay. Then, they’re arranged into intricate mosaic patterns.
Where is Zellige Tile From?
At our core, we appreciate the beauty that comes with true craftsmanship. Zellige tiles are a perfect example of that. It’s an art that’s been passed down through generations of master artisans. Only genuine Zellige tiles are crafted with such care and precision.
What makes Zellige so unique is its imperfections. In fact, if your Zellige tiles appear too perfectly carved and level, then they’re not true Zellige. These imperfections are what give Zellige its charm. The lifted edges and variations in glaze create a gorgeous shine and captivating texture. Since each glaze depends on the brush pressure, color mix, and time in the kiln, no two tiles will ever look identical. This is what makes Zellige so special and sought after in the world of tile design. I absolutely love these tiles for their inherent flaws, color variations, and authenticity!

1. Ceramic Tile
While ceramic tiling may not be considered the perfect alternative to Zellige, it’s the one I’d consider first. Ceramic tile is a manufactured tile made from clay and other materials, while Zellige tile is a handmade tile made from ceramic clay. It’s much easier to deal with, can be cut to specifications suitable for your home, and come in a large variety of options!
This is the alternative we chose for one of our bathrooms, as it’s much more durable and resistant to wear and tear. Plus, I find it to be similarly stunning!

3. Cement Tile
Cement tiles offer a similar handcrafted look and come in a variety of colors and patterns. However, they can be more expensive than other tile options and require regular maintenance to prevent staining and chipping.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a unique and textured tile option like Zellige, there are several alternatives worth considering. From cement tiles to subway tiles to terracotta tiles, each option offers its own unique benefits and drawbacks. However, if you’re looking for an option that is durable, easy to maintain, and priced affordably, ceramic tile may be the best alternative for you.
