Would you ever think to add books, plants, artwork or even using your glassware to spruce up your kitchen? Why not? Your favorite decor items used in your living space can also be used in the kitchen in spaces like open shelving to provide a sophisticated and fun spin on a traditional kitchen.
Open Shelving
Open shelves are shockingly underutilized. They make it very simple to display cookbooks, glassware, and decor. Too many cabinets make a kitchen feel closed off, and using this open shelving technique visually breaks up that space. This technique works in large and small kitchens and still provides plenty of storage. Open shelving can also be used within see through cabinets.
Displaying Glassware
Glassware can be so aesthetically pleasing so why not display it? Whether it be wine glasses, clear coffee mugs, or colored glass that plays with your homes accent color, display it on open shelves or see through cabinets. This technique applies to dinnerware as well, but keep it minimal. Overwhelming a shelf with too much of anything will have the opposite “open” effect we’re going for. Using glasses or dinnerware of varying heights also helps to create depth. This makes the overall view more appealing to the eye.
Cook Books, Artwork, and Plants.
A pop of green from your favorite plant, a small piece of artwork, or your favorite stack of cookbooks brings a personal touch to your kitchen. The kitchen is the heart of the home and pulling decor pieces into it makes it feel that way! Open shelving makes this so easy! This also allows you to change up the space as often as you’d like with seasonal or new colors. Stacking a variety of your favorite cookbooks combines easy storage and accessibility to them. Add a bowl or vase on top for a “layering” effect that creates height and texture differences. Here’s link to a few of my favorite decor pieces.
