One of the best home tips I can share with you is the process of layering decor. Layering decor in a room adds not only dimension but also an extra element of warmness. You can create the coziest aesthetic but layering decor pieces in any room! Here’s how!
Layering Decor in Your Living Room
A lot of my home is styled through layering. First, you’ll start with your base. If it’s a couch, you’ll layer with pillows and throws. If it’s a table, you’ll add layering decor with pieces like coffee table books, candles, or plants. You can add a lamp with a small basket and a stack of books to a side table. When you’re layering decor over a base like a rug, you’ll want to think of pieces like baskets or plants (faux or real). This can create a more inviting atmosphere in a big, open room.
Layering in a Kitchen
With a kitchen or dining room, you’ll start with the base that is least used. You won’t want to add a ton of elements to a space that is frequently used (such as a bar counter or small table). If you do add pieces to these types of surfaces, make sure that they are smaller decorations so that the space isn’t overwhelming.
Some of my favorite ways to layer decor in a kitchen is with cookbooks, cutting boards, glasses, framed art, or candles.
Bedroom Layering
For a bedroom, you can apply a lot of the same layering techniques as you would in a living room. Throw pillows and blankets make for excellent layering additions. You can also layer it within a dresser or side table, especially with framed artwork and plants to cozy up the room a bit. For furniture layering, remember to keep it open and simple.
Layering on Shelves and Console Tables
If you have extra wall space in an entryway, hallway, kitchen, etc., a great way to fill that space is with a shelf full of layered decor. If the area is exposed to natural light, you can add a few small plants. A few other ideas are of course faux greenery, but also books, candles, framed art, or small knick-knacks.
Here are a few of my favorite items to style a console table:
Tips for Layering Decor
If you’re getting ready to layer decor, here are a few things to keep in mind.
Keep it consistent: Keep the theme of your house consistent. Whether your style is modern, classic, or coastal – you’ll want to tie the decor to what you already have. Modern homes with lots of black and whites look great with pops of gold or green. If your home has a classic or coastal style, stick to blues, greens, and neutrals.
Stay true to your personality: Let your personality shine through layered decor! Unique pieces can include framed photos of your family, friends, etc., or your favorite artwork.
Too much of a good thing is too much: Don’t overwhelm the space! For example, don’t overuse greenery – a wreath probably shouldn’t be mixed with flowers and plants. If you find yourself piling things up on a shelf, it may be too much. Keep it simple!
