A few weeks ago, we had the wonderful Tory Baker over to our home for a newborn photography session to capture our family as we welcomed our third little one! I am so giddy to share some of our favorites shots from our time together and also share some family session outfit inspiration with you all.
Many of you may not know that before I started Bloom and Babe, I was a fine art film photographer. After finding out we were pregnant with our third kiddo, I decided to focus on my family and put a bookmark in my business. I must say, part of owning and running my owning Decorus Photography, one of my favorite parts was helping clients choose and style their wardrobe. I’ve put together a list of four things to keep in mind when pulling together your family session wardrobe:
- Depending on the setting and location of your session, I tend to stick to a neutral and organic color palate. Think white, cream, soft beige or grays, blush, and chambray.
- Layers layers layers! I like to choose a few solid colors that I know will compliment one another and then add layers and texture. Add a chunky knit, a scarf or a hat that you can easily take off to give yourself more options.
- Try to avoid matching the entire family in one color. I like to choose two to three colors and alternate them between family members. An example of this could be: Mom in a white long maxi dress, dad in khakis and a chambray button down, daughter in a light blue linen dress with brown sandals, and son in a white button up shirt and chambray style chino pants. I would tell mom to throw on a light knit sweater on top of her dress and add a headband for the daughter. Both are items that add something different but can be taken off for a different look.
- AVOID logos and busy prints. I get it, you love NIKE, but you don’t have to have it written across your chest while documenting a sweet moment during a family portrait session. Stick to solid prints and add texture through layering.
Here are some fun style boards I put together to give you all a few ideas! Happy shopping!
