I believe that a well-designed home reflects the personality and style of its owner. Whether you are looking to renovate your space or add some personality to your home, these design elements will do that! From the timeless elegance of wallpaper to the rustic charm of exposed beams; these design choices are sure to make your home stand out and reflect your unique style. These design elements are also easy to use together in the same space. So without further ado, let’s dive into the five ways to add character to your home!
1. Wallpaper & Wall Treatments
Wallpaper and wall treatments have recently surged in popularity as a way to add character and texture to a room. This trend has evolved beyond the traditional floral prints. It now includes bold graphic patterns and even textured materials such as grasscloth and cork. One of the great things about wallpaper is its versatility. It can use wallpaper on accent walls for a bold statement or on all four walls to create a cozy look. Another trend is using wallpaper in unexpected places! For example, on ceilings or in small nooks and alcoves, to add a touch of whimsy and surprise.
Wall treatments like ship-lap and wall paneling have also made a comeback. Incorporating these into your home creates visual depth that’s incredibly eye-catching and immediately adds character to your home.

2. Arches
Firstly, arches are a timeless design trend that has recently gained popularity for those looking for unique ways to add character to their space. Arches can be incorporated in a variety of ways, from doorways and windows to room dividers and accent walls. They can be customized to fit a variety of architectural styles, from modern to traditional. They are made from various materials, including wood, metal, and even plaster. One of the benefits of adding arches is that they can create a sense of flow and openness. This makes a room feel larger and more inviting. Additionally, they add a sense of architectural interest and detail to a space, helping to elevate the overall design. If you are looking for a way to add character to your home, consider incorporating arches into your design scheme.
3. Statement Lighting
Statement lighting is an often overlooked but essential design element that can truly transform a room. Sconces, pendants, and chandeliers are types of lighting fixtures that are especially popular for adding character and interest to a space.
Sconces
These can be used to add ambient lighting or to highlight a specific area or object, such as a piece of art or a bookshelf. They come in a variety of styles, from traditional to modern, and can be mounted on walls or even ceilings for a unique and unexpected look.
Pendants
Pendants are another type of statement lighting that can make a big impact in a room. Firstly, they can be used as a focal point in a space, such as over a dining table or kitchen island, or as a way to add interest to a hallway or entryway. Pendants come in a variety of sizes and styles, from sleek and modern to ornate and traditional. Secondly, when used properly, statement lighting can not only add character and interest to a room, but can also create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Chandeliers
Finally, let’s not forget about chandeliers! While they have been a mainstay in traditional design for centuries, there’s been a welcome resurgence of them as a way of adding some pizzazz to interior style. There’s so much variance of chandelier options out there and they easily become a statement piece. Adding a chandelier is a great way to draw attention to high ceilings or simply to add character to your home. Below, on the right, is a photo of our previous home where we incorporated multiple statement lighting options within the same space. Note the chandelier, the pendant lighting above the island, and the sconces in the rear of the kitchen.
4. Accent Stone
Stone can be used in a variety of ways, from accent walls and fireplace surrounds to kitchen backsplashes and bathroom showers. The natural texture and variation of stone adds depth and interest to a room and can be used to create a variety of design styles, from rustic and cozy to sleek and modern. Additionally, stone can be used to create a sense of continuity throughout a home, tying together different design elements and creating a cohesive look.
5. Beams
This may be my favorite design element! If I can add a beam somewhere, I’m going to! Statement beams add so much warmth, texture, and interest to a room. Natural wood beams, in particular, are great for incorporating natural elements into your space. Whether you opt for rough-hewn, reclaimed beams or sleek, stained wood, statement beams can add a sense of architectural interest and detail to a room.
Combining Multiple Design Elements
Don’t ever be afraid of combining these multiple design elements. By layering different textures, colors, and materials, you can add depth and interest to a space and create a cohesive design scheme that feels intentional and thoughtful. For example, pairing natural wood beams with a stone accent wall can create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while adding statement lighting fixtures can draw attention to these design elements and create a focal point in the room. You should create a space that feels custom and unique to your personal style, while also adding interest and character to your home! In almost every photo you see in this blog, there are numerous design elements incorporated. In conclusion, if interior designers aren’t scared to combine elements, you shouldn’t be either!
